Nursing homes are facilities that offer around-the-clock care for elderly or disabled people that aren’t able to care for themselves at home but don’t need to be hospitalized. The services that they offer can vary greatly, but there are a few basic services that most nursing homes provide.
Common Services Offered by Nursing Homes
The goal of a nursing home is to provide quality care for residents that need extra assistance with basic tasks. Some things nursing homes provide include:
- A furnished room
- Daily meals
- Medical care by qualified RN’s, LPN’s, and CNA’s
- Social activities
Nurses and nurses’ aides are on-staff 24 hours a day to provide medical care to residents. There may also be doctors on-site periodically to check up on residents and perform examinations.
Extra Services Offered by Nursing Homes
Some nursing homes go above and beyond, either as a courtesy included with the basic nursing home fee or at an additional cost. Extra services that may be provided include:
- Rehabilitation services
- On-site pharmacy
- On-site lab and x-ray
- On-site dental examinations
- Personal care products
- Personal care services like haircuts or manicures/pedicures
- Day trips and extracurricular activities
Deciding on a Nursing Home
The nursing home you choose should offer all of the basic features you need, along with the extra features you can afford. The top priority is the comfort of the resident and having the assurance that their needs are being met. Extra features are nice to have, but if they aren’t a necessity, and the cost outweighs the benefit, having a loved one or outside facility provides the extra features that may be more cost-effective.
Knowing that a loved one is safe, and having their needs met in a nursing home can help ease some of the fears associated with taking care of them. A nursing home should provide services that meet all of the physical, emotional, and social needs that a resident has so that they can continue to live a healthy, happy, and prosperous life, despite their age or disability.
